Description: Paving a path from the garden shed will help "catapult your garden into the 21st century", as one industry expert has claimed.

Writing in the Telegraph, landscape architect Bunny Guinness reports that introducing paving to the garden immediately adds structure and the impression of extra space.

Common paving materials were slab, stone and wood, however salvaging "odds and ends" was just as satisfying, writes Ms Guinness.

"Try clay roof tiles laid so that just the thin end shows, in blocks, stripes or patterns, or play around with thin pebbles laid with the deep side bedded in mortar; these can be straight or in scrolls and bound gravel can fill the space."

Smashed terracotta pots, plates and coloured bottles can be used for simple mosaics and patches of bright colour instantly adds "zing", she said.

Meanwhile Lewisham Council warns that extra paving leads to less garden space and fewer trees to encourage biodiversity. The Council recommends using permeable paving materials which allow water to soak into them.
